Les Devoirs
l'imparfait. TheThe The most important learning that you will do in this course will take place during class time. When scheduling appointments and activities, please avoid missing your French class. Copying notes cannot reproduce oral practice.
During your first two years, you will be asked to listen to CD's outside of class. This listening will help you develop a nice French accent with a natural intonation. Students who do not listen well often find that reading and speaking in class is embarrassing and uncomfortable. You may be asked to listen to recordings in French 3 and French 4, also, but your accent will be established, and though you can always improve your accent, the emphasis will focus on comprehension.
You will be asked to do "recherches" on the web. If you do not have access to the internet at home, you may arrange to use a school computer. These assignments will be made in advance so that you will not be caught short with a "computer problem."
Homework will sometimes be written, but will also be to study and review in greater depth the topics practiced in class. You are expected to be able to use structure, vocabulary and grammar previously presented.
You must not study at the last minute for tests. You will not retain the material for use later in the course. You should instead study for French class in small, but frequent and regular increments. If your assignment involves memorizing a part for presentation, you will be graded on your oral work.
This system will place an emphasis on the work you do each day, rather than on your rote memory of vocabulary for a test (sometimes used incorrectly and too easily forgotten.)
On a negative note: DON'T BE LATE! DON'T SPEAK TO YOUR NEIGHBOR WHEN A CLASSMATE IS SPEAKING! DON'T FORGET TO ALWAYS SKIP LINES! DON'T BRING DRINKS OR FOOD TO CLASS! DO NOT BE DISRESPCTFUL TO YOUR TEACHER AND DISTRACTING TO YOUR CLASSMATES BY DOING OTHER WORK DURING THIS CLASS!
If you should be absent or miss an assignment, you must consult personally with me ASAP when you return to school in order to schedule your make-up work. Remember that assignments will be placed on the web and even if you do not feel up to completing them, you should be aware of your missed work. Please do not expect to make up "stale" work on the last day of the grading period.
We are fortunate to have so many resources in our classroom and to be able to extend our study of the French language to include culture, literature, art and history. I hope that this course will open up a world which will enrich your life forever. What a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to share this experience with you! Votre Madame
